Farewell to China's top hepatobiliary surgeon WU Mengchao

China's top hepatobiliary surgeon WU Mengchao, known as the "father of Chinese hepatobiliary surgery," passed away on May 22nd at the age of 99. On May 27th, HENU held a memorial meeting for Academician WU Mengchao at Conference Room 152, Administration Building, Jinming Campus. Vice President SUN Junjian, heads of Publicity Department, Institute of Science and Technology, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Health, School of Pharmacy and other relevant departments, along with representatives of teachers and students, attended the forum.

At the memorial meeting, all participants stood in silent tribute to express their deep mourning  and then watched "The Reader - Father of Hepatobiliary Surgery Wu Mengchao". Participants recalled WU's extraordinary life, his great spirit of benevolence, and indifference to fame and wealth. As the pioneer surgeon in Chinese liver surgery, he completed more than 16,000 operations and trained nearly 300 masters, doctors and post-doctors before bidding farewell to the operating table at 96. "It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day," WU once said.

SUN Junjian said that we should model ourselves on Academician WU and formulate HENU’s characteristic work plan on medical education, so as to speed up the innovative development of medical education and contribute to the construction of a harmonious socialist society.

All participants expressed that as medical education practitioners, we should learn from his conscientious, responsible and meticulous work and study attitude, truly care about the people's livelihood, and commemorate Academician WU with our efforts and actions.
