Mingde Forum - Life Science, a series of academic events held by Henan University in honor of its 110th anniversary, was launched with its opening meeting held on April 1st. More than 200 teachers and students were invited to attend the meeting online and onsite, which was presided over by the Vice President Xuelu Wang.
Professor Zixin Deng, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, gave a report themed To make the "unpopular" popular and make the "popular" advanced - the scientific and humanistic opinions based on my scientific research. He introduced the terms the "unpopular (research project)" and the "popular (research project)" based on his researching experiences, and clarified his deep understanding of the complexity between science and humanities. He then concluded his report by, according to his own research experience in the “popular” and the “unpopular”, suggesting that students' innovation capacity is more dependent on such factors as the long-term diligence, pragmatic mindset, cooperation and exchanges.
Chun-Peng Song, President of Henan University, said at the end of the meeting that Academician Deng had persisted with innovations from basic research and made significant contributions in relevant field, and praised his moving from basic research to applied research to serve to meet the needs of the economic and social development. Song also encouraged young teachers and students to cultivate their scientific spirit of continuous exploration and to improve themselves in exchanges and discussion of issues in science and technology.
