Medical support to other countries never ceases, for the love has no borders. The 22nd China medical team in Zambia consists of 28 doctors, of which 4 are from divisions of general surgery, radiology, otolaryngology and anesthesiology from Huaihe Hospital of Henan University and 4 are from divisions of anesthesiology, medical imaging, stomatology and gastroenterology from First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University. The entire team will work in Zambia for one year to help Zambia curb the spread of diseases.
It is reported that Zambia, as a developing country with bad infrastructure, has long been plagued by poor sanitation and weak health-care system. The 8 members of the medical team have been devoted to serving local patients and sharing clinical experiences with local doctors to help them better understand the route to curb diseases in spite of adversity and challenges.
Guo Guoxiao, a member of the medical team from Huaihe Hospital of Henan University, is now responsible for performing major surgery in division of general surgery at Levy Hospital, Lusaka, capital of Zambia. The busy division has to provide surgery that is awaited by many patients. The left-handed photo below shows Guo is performing a retroperitoneal tumor operation for a patient, which is a great challenge to any surgeons because of its high risk and high level of difficulty. Nevertheless, Guo, with his superb surgical skill, successfully performed the surgery. Besides his routine work, Guo frequently rushes to the hospital to perform emergency surgery at midnights and gives lectures to students and young surgeons on the basics of general surgery and clinical and surgical skills, which presents a clear medical direction for local doctors and is widely acclaimed by local doctors from division of general surgery and the ones from division of surgery.

Yu Qing, Wang Guanghui and Yan Zeng, three other doctors from Huaihe Hospital of Henan University, are working in Livingston Central Hospital. They are facing the same tough situation as Guo is, but they soon adapt to the working environment and dedicate themselves to sharing medical experience with local doctors and giving instructions to local doctors in surgical skills through performing clinical surgery, which have been highly praised by the hospital and its staff members.

Han Hongliang and Yin Xiaoxiang, doctors from First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University, are now working at University Teaching Hospital (UTH), University of Zambia, Lusaka, capital of Zambia. Doctors in this busy hospital perform many operations every day and cannot be able to have meals on time. Han makes a bold attempt to anaesthetize patients by the method of spinal anesthesia combined with general anesthesia, which is pioneered by him at University Teaching Hospital and helps enlighten local doctors about the better use of the anaesthetic. Besides working full time in division of medical imaging at University Teaching Hospital, Yin also works part time at Levy Hospital. He takes up jobs of providing computed tomography (CT or CAT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for patients with intractable diseases, having consultation with patients and performing some interventional operations.
There are two photos of Han instructing local doctors in the use of tracheal cannulas and the method of venipuncture in children at University Teaching Hospital.

Ren Chunfu and Guo Ertao, two other doctors from First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University, are currently working Levy Hospital. Two doctors make great efforts to serve patients and cure their diseases despite the shortage of medical equipment they are facing, which soon earns them trust and respect of both local doctors and patients. Guo, working as both the only endoscopist in Levy Hospital and vice president for hospital’s administration, is snowed under with work every single day. However, besides working during the days, he ever spent some nights consulting an English-Chinese dictionary to translate an instruction manual on gastroscope into English in order for him to tutor local graduate students in the use of endoscope.

All the eight doctors are ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things every day. They, as competent professionals with sufficient expertise, serve the medical needs of local patients wholeheartedly with their profession and contribute to the development of health care and education in Zambia. All what they have done is the best demonstration of international assistance, which embodies a spirit that motivates not only medical workers from Huaihe Hospital of Henan University Chinese and First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University but all the medicals teams across China.
