Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Henan International Joint Laboratory for Nuclear Protein Regulation (Key Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Biological Safety in Kaifeng, hereinafter called the Laboratory) actively participated in the researches related to COVID-19, continued to speak its own ideas out and published a series of professional articles, which shows the spirit of Henan University to fight against COVID-19.

Han Yanjie, a graduate of the laboratory and a key member of the team, published a paper titled Advances and Challenges in the Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19 in International Journal of Medical Sciences. This paper introduces the origin, virology and epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2, reviews the known drugs that can prevent and treat coronavirus, and explains the characteristics of novel coronavirus, which provides new information for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, and achieves a breakthrough in the research field of novel coronavirus pneumonia in the laboratory.

Wang Lintao, a clinical medicine undergraduate of 2015, completed an article entitled Progress in Research on SARS-CoV-2 Infection Causing Neurological Diseases and Its Infection Mechanism under the guidance of the laboratory, which was accepted by Frontiers in Neurology, an international journal in the field of Neurology. In this paper, several different pathways of novel coronavirus’ invasion into the central nervous system were analyzed and discussed. In addition, the cut-in point for the treatment of novel coronavirus, other possible action targets of novel coronavirus and future research directions are also proposed in this paper, which have certain value for guiding the treatment. The publishing of the paper clearly shows that the laboratory encourages undergraduate students to participate in scientific research project, leads the students to carry out academic research, carries on training in practice and scientific thinking ability, broadens the students’ academic horizons, inspires the students to study by themselves, and improves the students' professional level. All these efforts enable the students to become better and stronger.

Jia Tiantian, the postgraduate of the laboratory, published article entitled Mental Health Research Progress of the Medical Staff Under the Background of COVID-19 in October 2020. By reviewing the COVID-19 medical staff’s mental health research at home and abroad, Jia summarizes the assessment tools, influence factors of the medical staff’s mental health. The methods to improve mental health from the perspective of physiologic, safety, love and belonging, the respect and self-realization, health promotion methods were summarized. And the positive psychological intervention measures provides reference for the management of the medical staff’s mental health.

In December 2020, the graduate student, He Qinglin, published an article in Journal of Henan University, which entitled COVID-19 related Complications and Research Progress. Under the guidance of the tutors in the lab, the postgraduate student Zhang Yiming also published an article in Journal of Henan University, which entitled Role of Hospital Nursing Emergency Management in COVID-19 outbreak.

In 2021, under the guidance of the tutor, the graduate Lu Dan published an article in the Journal in Jinan University (natural science and medicine edition), which entitled Effects of Novel Coronavirus on Multiple Physiological Systems. Based on the research at home and abroad, this paper summarizes the damage and influence caused by SARS-CoV-2 on various physiological systems of human body, and provides necessary guidance for clinical workers to further understand SARS-CoV-2.

In addition, an article entitled the Impact of COVID-19 on National Security and Countermeasures written by Liu Chuan, Ye Shaoyong and Diao Boyu, who are the undergraduates in 2018 in the major of Clinical Medicine. The article has been accepted by the National Journal of Intelligent Health. In this paper, the effects of COVID-19 on epidemic prevention and control, laboratory bio-safety and public health are reviewed from the perspective of bio-safety. In terms of other aspects of national security, this paper analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on international relations, overseas interests, and national economies. At the end of the paper, it draws a lesson from the outbreak. The three students put up the initiative from the perspective of doing a good job in bio-safety and improving national security system. They also speak out their ideas on national management, scientific research talent fund, public opinion, mental health, bio-safety education etc.

This is another coronavirus-related paper written by an undergraduate in the lab after Wang Lintao, an undergraduate of 2015, published an English paper in an international journal last year. All these progress shows that the undergraduate tutorial system of Henan University plays a crucial role in cultivating talents.

Henan International Joint Laboratory for Nuclear Protein Regulation was established in December 2017, with the approval of Henan Provincial Department of Science and Technology. It was established by the relevant personnel from School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing and Health, School of Life Sciences and affiliated hospitals of Henan University, and took the new nucleoprotein PCNP (a nucleoprotein containing PEST amino acid sequence) as the main research target under the leadership of Prof. Xin-Ying Ji, the founder and director of the laboratory. The concept of the laboratory is: co-construction, sharing and win-win. The laboratory's goals are to elucidate the relationship between PCNP and diseases, particularly tumors and viral infections, develop PCNP-related drugs, and establish a PCNP research and development center.
