Recently, conditional marketing authorization of the recombinant Covid-19 vaccine (Ad5-nCoV), KeweishaTM, developed by the Cansino Biotech Co., Ltd. and the Institute of Bioengineering of the Academy of Military Medicine of the Academy of Military Sciences, has been approved. As China's first single-dose COVID-19 vaccine approved to be marketed conditionally, it is going to play a positive role in the prevention and control of the epidemic in China and even the world.
During the development of the adenovirus vaccine, teachers and students of the School of Life Sciences have made great contributions to the launch. Facing the engineering and technical difficulties of mass production after listing, Cansino Biotech Co., Ltd. cooperated with Professor Bai Zhonghu Group on process engineering research in July 2019. Bai Zhonghu, Liu Yupeng and Sun Yang comprehensively analyzed the engineering technical problems, and actively cooperated with Tianjin Cansino Biological Co., Ltd. to establish a horizontal project of Adenovirus Vector Vaccine Perfusion Cell Culture Technology Development. In August 2020, Feng Kai and Huang Lingling who are the Biopharmaceutical graduates were sent to Tianjin Cansino Biological Company to carry out one-year research training, participating in the development of the vaccine.
During the cooperation with Tianjin Cansino Bio, Feng Kai and HuangLingling systematically learned the production process of theCovid-19 vaccine, and deeply participated in the optimization of the adenovirus vaccine production. After an in-depth investigation of the production process of the vaccine, considering that the hollow fiber used in the production of recombinant adenovirus vector Covid-19 vaccine is monopolized by foreign companies and is expensive, the project team carried out the screening and evaluation of domestic hollow fibers and cooperated with Xinhua Medical Group to develop corresponding hollow fiber products. In cooperation with the Shenzhen Medrei Biology team, a new type of hollow fiber perfusion system developed in a short period of time was successfully applied to the process development of recombinant adenovirus vaccines, and initially realized the domestic development of related products.
The School of Life Sciences attaches great importance to the training of the professional practice of pharmacy, actively explores cooperation with enterprises through various ways, and strives for opportunities to send students to the front-line of production practice, so as to improve the quality of training of pharmacy professionals in the college and enhance service in local economic and social capabilities. Through this cooperation, the students’ engineering thinking has been exercised and their innovation ability has been improved. Combining theory and practice, students can apply what they have learned. Besides, the training of professional talents in the college and social requirement effective docking have been strengthened.
