On the morning of May 18^th, The opening ceremony of the 4^th International Symposium on health and Development of Vulnerable Populations, jointly sponsored by Henan International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Research Base for Physical and Mental Health of Vulnerable Groups, School of Education of Henan University and Arnold School of Public Health of University of South Carolina-Columbia, was held in the Kaiyuan Mingdu Hotel.

 Liu Zhijun – Vice President of HENU, Zhao Guoxiang – Party Secretary of Henan Normal University, Wang Minghui – Associate Dean of Education School of HENU, Zhao Junfeng – Director of Henan International Scientific and Technological cooperation Research Base attended the Symposium. Lorriane Sherr – head of Psychology Department of London University, Sayward Harrison - Arnold School of Public Health of University of South Carolina-Columbia and other experts also participated. The opening ceremony was presided over by Li Xiaoming, a lifelong professor at the University of South Carolina-Columbia and the chief foreign expert of Henan International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Research Base for Physical and Mental Health of Vulnerable Groups.

On behalf of Henan University, Liu Zhijun extended a warm welcome and sincerely gratitude to all the experts for their long-term assistance. He made an introduction of the relevant research results of Henan University in psychology, pedagogy, vulnerable groups, etc. Liu Zhijun noted that the prosperity and development of psychology was the only way to achieve humanistic care. How to help the vulnerable people to improve their physical and mental health and to promote their psychological development was the major theoretical and practical core of the current psychological and sociological research. This International Symposium was a grand gathering bottom on historical mission and social responsibility and he wished it all success.

Zhao Guoxiang stressed that taking good care of citizens, especially the vulnerable groups, was not only a psychological, educational and public health problem, but also a hot topic nowadays. He believed that the achievements of the vulnerable groups reflected the government's sense of responsibility to social citizens, and this international symposium would be a great opportunity to demonstrate the sense of social and historical responsibility. Loriane Sherr highlighted that it was difficult to raise children and understand children, but it must last a lifetime, and everyone should learn to understand children. "Half of what we've learned so far is wrong", she expressed her expectation for this symposium with this sentence from Harvard University in the end and she hoped that other experts and she could find the other half of right knowledge in the symposium.
