Zuliang Du: A founding dean of School of Materials, HENU

Professor Zuliang Du, born in 1966, obtained his Master's and Ph.D degrees in Condensed Matter Physics from Jilin University located in the northeast China in 1991 and 1999, respectively.

Following his doctoral supervisor - Professor Ziqiang Zhu, Du joined Solid Surface Laboratory of Henan University. Du was a core member in the founding of School of Materials, and with his efforts, the Key Lab for Special Function Materials was approved as the Key Laboratory of Henan Province, then of Ministry of Education.

Enthusiastic about Condensed Matter Physics profession, Du has consistently been involved in researching high-performance optoelectronic materials and devices for more than 20 years: designing new models, searching for novel methods, and combining existing ones. A physical model of the surface barrier of controlled surface states of low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures, a new method for the synthesis of dual-template biomimetic mineralization materials and the combination of molecular assembly (chemical method) and nano-imprinting technology (physical method) - a unique nanostructure material construction technology to realize the large-area for a low-cost preparation of nanostructures are part of his daily work.

Du’s innovations yielded 20 authorized patents, more than 200 SCI academic papers, 2 books and 7 published identification results.

His pragmatic experiences accumulated through years has brought Du golden opportunities to preside over 10 national scientific research projects, namely, the national major basic research, “973” preliminary special project, the National Natural Science Foundation Major Nano Research Program, the National Natural Science Foundation Key Project, the National Natural Science Foundation General Project, and the Ministry of Education University Science and Technology Innovation Project Major Project item.

Besides research, promoting the development of the younger generation has always been Du’s priority: he has supervised more than 60 doctor-and-master-level projects, of which, two were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Youth Project. The projects, suggested by Du, focusing on the major needs of Henan's regional economy for a new generation of high-efficiency display and lighting technology, developed key core technologies such as quantum dot material preparation and nanostructure design, which greatly improved the red, green and blue three-color quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED). The luminous efficiency has reached the practical index: QLED's key indicators such as luminous efficiency, brightness and lifespan are at the international leading level. The results were published in "Nature Photonics" and selected as "Top Ten Progresses in Chinese Optics in 2019".

Du is now the director of the Key Laboratory of Special Functional Materials of the Ministry of Education and the Lead Director of the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for High-Efficiency Display and Lighting Technology; additionally, the deputy director of the China Ordered Molecular Membrane Professional Committee after being elected as the Central Plain Scholar in 2014.

Persistent effort in scientific research and education granted Professor Du honorable awards -- the special allowance by the State Council in 2002, New Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education in 2004, the leader of the innovation team by the Ministry of Education in 2012.
