SUN Jun

Sun Jun is an expert in tunnel and underground construction engineering, his native place is Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, and he was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Having graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering, Jiaotong University in 1949, he is currently a professor in the Department of Underground Building Engineering, Tongji University. A new branch (1960), Engineering Mechanics of Underground Structures, has been developed and established by Sun Jun in the field of tunnels and underground structures, and he has made systematic and in-depth research on the frontier disciplines such as visco-elastic-plastic theory of underground structures, rheology of geotechnical materials and anti-explosion dynamics of underground protective structures. In recent ten years, he has made considerable innovation and progress in the application of engineering and soft science theories and methods (focusing on intelligent science) in rock engineering in urban environment. Since the 1980s, he has undertaken and completed about 40 key national scientific and technological research projects, natural science funds and various major engineering research projects, and the results have been applied into production practice, and great technical and economic benefits have been achieved. Combining his teaching activities with scientific research, he has trained dozens of Master and Doctoral students. Since 1960, Tongji University has presided over the establishment of the first tunnel and underground building engineering major in China. In 1991, he was elected academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
