ICCPG-4 Held Successfully at Henan University

On June 3-4th, 2017, the 4th International Conference on Chinese Prosodic Grammar (ICCPG-4), was successfully held at Henan University. The International Conference on Chinese Prosodic Grammar, initially launched by Professor Shengli FENG, had been held twice at The Chinese University of Hong Kong on March 30-31st, 2013 and November 6-8th, 2015, respectively. The third one was held at Beijing Language and Culture University, on September 24-25th, 2016. The current 4th International Conference on Chinese Prosodic Grammar was sponsored by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, undertaken by the School of Foreign Languages of Henan University, assisted by Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics of Henan University Institute and “Foreign Studies” editorial department.

On June 3rd, 2017, Professor ZHAO Guoxiang, deputy party secretary of Henan University, Professor GAO Jihai, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Henan University, and Professor WAN Xinfang, party secretary of the School of Foreign Languages of Henan University attended the opening ceremony. Professor ZHAO warmly introduced Henan University and expressed cordial greetings to the guests; Professor FENG said that it was the second time for the International Conference on Chinese Prosodic Grammar to be held in the mainland. He observed that it was of profound significance to have this Conference held in Central plain area, especially at Henan University. Professor GAO comprehensively introduced the development and achievements of prosodic grammar of recent years at Henan University. More than 100 experts and scholars from home and abroad were present at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Professor JIANG Ling from the School of Foreign Languages of Henan University.

Nine famous scholars from home and abroad were invited to make keynote addresses. They are Professor Shudong CHEN, Professor Lisa Lai-Shen CHENG, Professor San DUANMU, Professor Shengli FENG, Professor JIANG Di, Professor Yen-Hwei LIN, Professor MA Qiuwu, Professor Dylan W.-T. TSAI and Professor ZHAO Minli.

In order to encourage and cultivate more young scholars to devote to the researches on Prosodic Grammar, the conference continued to set up the Young Scholar Award for their outstanding papers on Prosodic Grammar. (The eligible applicants include young scholars, master’s or Ph.D. candidates under the age of 40). In the conference, ten young scholars from home and abroad reported their papers to the audiences, then the judges asked some questions to the shortlisted writers on the spot and made objective and in-depth comments. After the judges' anonymous votes, they awarded the first prize to ZHU Yuzhu (Rime Change in Nouns in the Dialect of Henan Wuzhi), a doctoral student of Tsinghua University supervised by Professor ZHAO Rixin and the second prize to Man Shan TONG (Prosodically Constrained Resumptives in Long Passives), a doctoral student of Chinese University of Hong Kong supervised by Professor Shengli FENG and HE Meifang (On the Prosodic Acquisition Mechanism of CSL Learners on Verb-resultative Construction with Objects), a doctoral student of Chinese University of Hong Kong supervised by Professor Virginia YIP.

Furthermore, considering the fact that there exist abundant phonological changes in Henan Province, the Conference specifically set an ad hoc Phonological Change Session so as to be beneficial for participants to discuss phonological change phenomena at home and abroad with regard to word formation, configuration, and rhythm, including tone-change, rime-change and intonation-change phenomena involving rhoticization, Z rime-change, D rime-change, L-insertion words, etc.

During this two-day conference, scholars from home and abroad has committed themselves to heated discussions from either diachronic or synchronic research perspective, concerning with Prosodic Phonology, Prosodic Word Formation, Prosodic Morphology, Prosodic Syntax, prosodic Stylistics, Prosodic Literature, Prosodic Teaching and Acquisition and other subfields, with a variety of linguistic phenomena covering Chinese (and its dialects), foreign languages, minority languages in China as well as poetry and traditional Chinese Operas, representing the multi-disciplinary and cross-linguistic development feature and perduring academic vitality of Prosodic Grammar. In the end, Professor San DUANMU from University of Michigan made a summary of this conference, commenting that more is the number of representatives attending this conference and thus it can be said that scholars of four generations are all together now. In addition, it is rather a good thing for academic development to have scholars from various theoretical backgrounds and with different academic understandings exchanging their ideas mutually.

The 5th International Conference on Chinese Prosodic Grammar (ICCPG-5) will be held at Fudan University.
